Part of the Kinderling Conversation for parents. Weekdays 12pm-1pm.

When your child starts to speak, it opens a whole new world of understanding. It gives us insight to their thoughts, their feelings, and who they are becoming.

Understanding another culture's language can create that same understanding and insight.

Aunty Fay Muir is an Elder, Traditional Owner of the Boon Wurrung Country and a senior linguist at the Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages in Melbourne.

She speaks to producer Elise Cooper about her book Nganga: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Words and Phrases about the importance of language, and how vital it is to educate our children when it comes to correct usage of language.

The word Nganga means 'to see and understand'. Aunty Fay explores her favourite and misunderstood words included in Nganga, as well as offering ways we can all encourage a love and respect of Indigenous cultures through language.

To get your hands on a copy of Aunty Fay's book, co-authored with Sue LawsonNganga: Aboriginial and Torres Strait Islander Words and Phrases, head to your local bookstore or order online.
