The importance of teaching manners

Is it important to you that your children have good manners? Shelley Davidow, author of Raising Stress Proof Kids, shares her ideas on how to help your children develop good manners.

It’s key to remember that “manners are societal behaviours… they’re the results of our experiences of gratitude, respect and kindness,” says Shelley.

When children are rude, it makes us think they do not have these sentiments. The way to instill these values in children is to lead by example. Shelley says we need to model this every step of the way as a parent. You don’t want your children to have ‘empty’ manners, saying please and thank you but not understanding what it means.

Every behaviour you display is cumulative ‘money in the bank’, helping their manners develop, meaning they grow polite, respectful and recognising what others are doing for them.
