What the federal budget means for families

Part of the Kinderling Conversation for parents. Weekdays 12pm-1pm.

Wed 10 May 2017

5 mins

Nicole Lessio, acting Executive Director of The Parenthood talks us through what the 2017 Federal Budget breaks down to, for families. The main points are:

Paid Parental Leave - Fortunately, will not be cut!

Medicare - Rebates were previously frozen, so out-of-pocket costs to see a GP (and specialists) have been increasing. Well now rebates will be increasing. And very unpopular cuts to pathology and preventative screening (like pap smears) have been reversed. However, there is still uncertainty about the home doctor service. We just don't know if there will be cuts here.

Tax - We'll all be paying more. The Medicare Levy will be increased by 0.5% from July 1 2019 to fund the NDIS. While workers will pay more, the billions of dollars of tax cuts for big businesses are still going ahead...

Education - Early learning funding is only 'guaranteed' for one more year. It's not giving certainty to parents or the early childhood education sector. One year isn't a guarantee, it's more like a warranty that you get with your toaster.
