Mixtape: Best Songs of 2017

Each week Kinderling shares a Mixtape.

2017 has been another stellar year for children's music. This year we saw superstars release their first kids' albums, like Jimmy Barnes and Jess Penner, as well as new release from old faves such as Peter Combe, The Wiggles and Justine Clarke. Plus awesome film soundtracks had us grooving, like that of Sing, My Little Pony and Despicable Me 3.

As ever, it's been so tricky to pick our faves! In no particular order, here are the tunes we've loved from the past year, including acoustic rock nursery rhymes, jazz, rockabilly, Indigenous languages, ambient noise and everything in between.

1. Dreamers - Lard Dog & The Band of Shy
The second album from New York's wackiest kids entertainer is energetic, upbeat and inspiring.

2. Havin' Fun - Lah-Lah
The ARIA-nominated album from Lah-Lah is all about, you guessed it, having fun! Hear Lah-Lah's "Music Time" segment on Play & Learn.

3. I'm Still Standing (from Sing)- Taron Egerton
Sing was technically released very late in 2016, but we couldn't let that stop us from getting this track on the 2017 Best Of list.

4. Intsy Wintsy Spider - Chaos At Play

A band name all parents will relate to, Chaos At Play do acoustic rock nursery rhyme covers and wild originals about sushi, robots going to the bathroom, and using frogs as frisbees.

5. Rainbow - Sia
A huge track from the Australian legend. This one was written for the My Little Pony movie, and performed in the film by Sia's pop-star Pegasus character, Songbird Serenade.

6. Thunder - Imagine Dragons
Big family-friendly pop from American rock band Imagine Dragons on their third album, Evolve

7. Imagination - Jess Penner
LA's Jess Penner wrote her first children's album this year, full of bright, cute, happy songs. We're hoping it's the first of many!

8. A Banana Is A Banana - Justine Clarke
Another instant classic from Austrlian kids' music royalty. Justine Clarke explores the quirks of the English language in this song about the funny names for different foods we eat.

9. Brighter Side - Gustafer Yellowgold
A Grammy-nominated album from New York-based cartoonist Morgan Taylor, who delves into the mind of a curious child on title track 'Brighter Side', encouraging us all to think positive.

10. Yellow Light - Pharrell Williams
Hitmaker Pharrell is back for Despicable Me 3, and produces several funky, fun tracks for the film. This was our fave.

11. I'm A Lady - Meghan Trainor
Another big song for a big movie, Meghan Trainor's empowering track led the Smurfs: The Lost Village soundtrack. Its reach went beyond the big screen though, leaping onto lists of positive songs for young women.

12. Yanada - The Preatures
One of our favourite grown-up tracks of the year. Sydney band The Preatures worked with Indigenous artist Jacinta Tobin (another Kinderling favourite!) on the lyrics to this song.

13. I'm A G'Nu - Jimmy Barnes
Barnsey's fun-filled kids album was crowned Best Children's Album at the ARIAs, and inspired thousands of google searches for "What is a G'Nu?".

14. Belyuen Talk It Out – Indigenous Hip Hop Projects
A collaborative track between IHHP and TEAMhealth in the Northern Territory, featuring Indigenous youth from the Belyuen community. ‘Talk It Out’ is an overwhelmingly positive and catchy song, encouraging people to open up and talk about their feelings.

15. Mouse & Moo - Mouse & Moo
A hip hop dad duo from Albury, NSW, Mouse & Moo's songs are sprinkled with references to the great rap artists, and littered with positive messages for kids.

16. Chillin' Like a Villain - Descendants 2 cast
The final film soundtrack song on our list, 'Chillin' Like A Villain's upbeat pop was inescapable after the release of Disney's Descendants 2 mid-year.

17. Into the Sky - Pnau
Australian dance music legends Pnau came back in 2017 after a few years off, with several typically energetic anthems making their way onto our station.

18. Talk About The Cat - Peter Combe
Also back in 2017 was one of Australian kids music's most famous names, Peter Combe. His album Live It Up is full of humorous tracks sung in his signature style.

19. More Yet - Dan Zanes and Friends
Grammy-winning Dan Zanes brought us Lead Belly, Baby this year, a rootsy album packed with stars including Aloe Blacc, Billy Bragg and Public Enemy's Chuck D.

20. Big Like A Lion - Princess Backpack and Benjamin
Benjamin Weiner and Princess Backpack, a magical talking, singing, rapping, dancing backpack, hail from Brooklyn NY. Together, they created one of kids music's most fun-filled albums.
