While a bit of a buzzword at the moment, superfoods are really just that – super for you and your kids to eat! They’re all natural, and high in crucial nutrition and antioxidants.
Your kids are developing at crazy speed, so incorporating healthy foods from the very beginning will help them start strong. In no particular order, here are our fave superfood picks for a varied and nutritious diet.
Packed with antioxidants and flavonoids, blueberries are a wonderful superfood for babies. They are great for your little one's eyes, brain, and urinary tract. Just blend them into a puree or crush them to remove the choking hazard.
Avocados are delicious and are an easy food for bub to consume when you mash it. They are high in good fats and will give baby's brain a little boost. Try mashing it with banana.
Chia seeds may be small but they are powerful. Full of antioxidants, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, iron, potassium, and protein, they are great to stir through your baby's yoghurt or soak overnight in coconut milk to make chia pudding.
Bub's diet should include lots of different veggies, but try to include this green powerhouse. As well as housing many essential vitamins, like vitamin C and folate, broccoli is an anti-cancer vegetable. Just remember that broccoli can make your bub a little windy. Also, thanks to its strong flavour, your baby might like it mixed with potato or sweet potato.
This brain and eye superfood is a great one to give to your bub. High in omega 3’s, protein and minerals, salmon acts as an anti-inflammatory in the body. Try poaching it and mashing it with a little milk.
Full fat, unsweetened, natural yoghurt is the best type of yoghurt for babies over six months. It contains calcium which is great for growing bones, vitamins A, D, E and K as well as good bacteria for gut health. It has it all!

If you're making a casserole for the family, save some and either mash or puree it for bub if they’re older than six months and has been eating solid foods for a little while. Red meat contains essential nutrients like iron, zinc, B vitamins and protein, which are all important for growth and development.
Whole grain oats are high in fibre and super nutritious. They are low GI and packed with B vitamins, which are essential for the nervous system. Buy the unflavoured ones which have less sodium and sugar and you can always add flavour by stewing some fruit and stirring it through.
Another baby food favourite, sweet potato is high in vitamin A and beta carotene as well as potassium. Sweet potatoes also make an easy puree and contain vitamin E, calcium and folate.
Previously eggs were off the menu for babies for 12 months due to allergy risks, but current research says we can give cooked eggs as a first food from six months. This is great because eggs are loaded with vitamins, minerals, high quality proteins, good fats and various other lesser-known nutrients. Check with your GP if you are concerned about introducing eggs though.
