More often than not, music gets you through the hardest times in life. And child labour has got to be one of those more painful times. Here's a few ‘genres’ of tunes that are ideal for pushing through!
1. Female empowerment songs
You can do this, sista. These tunes will keep you fired up and feeling super strong and invincible like the awesome female you are. Perfect for early labour when you’re side-swiped by the actual pain of contractions and excited that this is finally happening.
‘Spice Up Your Life’ – Spice Girls
Not only is this song bright and cheery, but the lyrics are positive and may even get you bopping about in the delivery room, if you’ve got the energy.
‘I will Survive’ – Gloria Gaynor
You might not be going through a break-up, but the sentiment of this song will still see you through the most challenging parts of your labour.
‘Roar’ – Katy Perry
A big voice and a big song – you can channel your inner tiger to help you ROAR through your contractions.
‘Run the World’ – Beyonce
“Who run the world? Girls.” Nothing says this like the miracle of birth, huh?

2. Calming and soothing
After a while, you might realise that labour is going to be a long haul. These gentle melodies will soothe the soul and keep you feeling inspired…
‘You’re beautiful’ – James Blunt
Because a labouring mama needs to be reminded.
‘Here Comes the Sun’ – The Beatles
This lovely and positive tune will remind you of the amazing bundle on its way to you.
‘Ain’t no Mountain’ – Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell
“Don’t you know that there ain’t no mountain high enough. Ain’t no valley low enough, ain’t no river wide enough. To keep me from getting to you, baby”.
A perfect song to keep you focused on getting to your baby.
‘Teardrop’ – Massive Attack
The film clip for this song features a baby in the womb and the lyrics are wonderfully inspirational and relaxing.
3. Pump up bangers
For when your energy might be flagging, these songs will help you and your partner hang in there like the champions you are…
‘We Are the Champions’ - Queen
Freddie wants you to keep on fighting, right to the end.
‘Tubthumping’ – Chumbawumba
“I get knocked down, but I get up again, You are never gonna keep me down.” Dare you not to get this catchy song stuck in your head.
‘Beautiful Day’ – U2
You might be in agony when you hear this song, but it will mark one of your most beautiful days in history.
‘Walking On Sunshine’ – Katrina & the Waves
You can’t help but feel energised when you hear this tune.
4. Upbeat mood lifters
Trust me, things can get pretty serious in the delivery room, especially if it’s been a long day/night and things are getting a bit edgy. These tunes will give you a giggle and ease any stress in the room. The hospital staff might enjoy them too.
‘Push it’ – Salt N Pepa
This song isn’t about birth so much, but the lyrics just work.
‘Stayin’ Alive’ – Bee Gees
There’s something about this tune that is groovy and oh-so-cool. Just hearing those high-pitched voices will dissolve any tension in the room.
‘Get Ur Freak On’ – Missy Elliott
If I could have my births over I’d be playing this song just to see the midwives’ faces.
‘All night Long’ – Lionel Richie
There’s a good chance your labour could go all night long, but what’s to stress about when Lionel’s singing this sweet 80’s tune?
