Sarah Hunstead on mumhood, running a business, and what it takes to save lives (literally!)

Kinderling News & Features

When she isn't saving lives through her business CPR Kids, paediatric emergency nurse, author and mum Sarah Hunstead is busy taking on the world (and raising two whip-smart and strong girls).

It took a road trip of epic proportions around Australia with her whole family to realise just what kind of mum she was.

She reflects on what she loves about being a mum, what she misses most, and what "me time" looks like for a business owner, friend, mum and partner.

1. What is your favourite thing about being a mum?

My favourite thing about being a mum is watching my little humans turn into bigger humans with their own quirky personalities. Sometimes I just can’t believe I gestated these little people. Then I look at my boobs and remember.

2. What’s your favourite thing to do with your children?

My favourite thing to do with my children is travel (yes, I even enjoy the plane trip!). Our favourite family activity at the moment is snorkelling at our local beaches together.

3. What is the thing you miss most about life pre-children?

I miss most about life pre-children is my boobs (just kidding). It is being able to go the beach with just a towel -  not a massive beach bag with everything but the kitchen sink, boogie boards, two kids in tow and 30 minutes of “CAN YOU PLEASE PUT YOUR SHOES/RASHIE/SUNSCREEN ON”! When I think about it, I guess that translates to being able to go somewhere by just walking out the door!

4. What has been the biggest surprise for you about being a mum?

The biggest surprise about parenting for me is the sibling relationship of my daughters  - my children are so very very different in personality. I don’t have any siblings so watching their relationship absolutely fascinates me.

5. What does “me time” look like for you?

‘Me time’ has changed significantly as the kids have gotten older. In the early years it was simply being alone, even doing the grocery shopping just to be in my own head and not have to talk to two kids under two!

Now, me time is usually reading - I am an avid reader and stopped reading for years after the kids were born. I’m now getting back into it and love it!
