Meet Mark Serrels: Tech wiz, porridge eater and rock climbing enthusiast

Kinderling News & Features

Mark Serrels has been writing about tech and video games for most of his career. He's now an Editorial Director at CNET News. He's also a rock climber, a big fan of porridge, and a dad, so we're super excited to welcome him to The Parent Panel!

1. What is your favourite thing about being a parent?

I’m a bit of a tiger dad, so I really love the moments when I’ve watched them struggle with something - be it homework or a puzzle or anything really – then they achieve it, or overcome an obstacle. In those moments you get to see their little brains grow and their self-worth grow as well. It’s beautiful.

2. What’s your favourite thing to do with your children?

I really love playing football with my kids, or taking them to the park and doing crazy challenges. It’s honestly a miracle my children haven’t broken bones yet! We go for a lot of long hikes in the forest together as well.

3. What is the thing you miss most about life before you became a father?

The freedom to be truly spontaneous. “Let’s just go to the cinema!” “Let’s go out for dinner!” My wife and I don’t really get to do that anymore. I’m one of those really annoying morning people, so I don’t miss the sleep!

4. What has been the biggest surprise for you about being a parent?

Lots of surprises, but maybe the biggest one: it’s completely transformed the way I think about my own parents. I can now relate to them on a level that didn’t exist before.

5. What does 'me time' look like for you?

Outdoor rock climbing! It’s time away from kids, technology, screens… other human beings! I love it and couldn’t survive without it!
