Rap fans! Nas has written a kids' book called 'I Know I Can'

Kinderling News & Features

Seriously. Another day, another celebrity releasing a kids' book! Singer Josh Pyke is our Story of the Week this week for his new kids' book Lights Out, Leonard, and just last week we shared the news of Sir Paul McCartney's upcoming kids' book set for release in late September.

Now it's hip-hop legend Nasir 'Nas' Jones' turn

The rapper had big hits with songs like If I Ruled The World and N.Y. State of Mind back in the nineties, but for his children's book debut, he's drawn inspiration from his 2002 release, I Can.

For those who need a refresh - sing it with me now:

I know I can (I know I can)
Be what I wanna be (be what I wanna be)
If I work hard at it (If I work hard it)
I'll be where I wanna be (I'll be where I wanna be)

A story to empower kids

The book is apparently the first in a new series, and it contains a great message for kids: that by tapping into their creativity, they can achieve awesome things. Age, size and lack of experience never needs to hold them back.

Nas is also the CEO of a media company called Mass Appeal, and the book release is connected to the launch of a new kids' brand, MAJR.

As they put it, "Our mission is to inspire future generations through the creation of unique toys, apparel, and innovative learning tools. Major is here to reflect the diverse hues of both the modern family and popular culture, because education starts in the crib."

Crib, in this context, seems to be meant in the very literal way.

A special mission

Now a father to two kids, Nas' mission to inspire kids is very close to his heart.

Sometimes, something as simple as a reminder that you can do something makes a world of difference to a kid's sense of belief in themselves - and that's definitely something worth encouraging!
