Amy and Mark: Sibling rivalry, gyms for obese children, terrible Mother's Day gifts

Great podcasts for parents and carers

Fri 11 May 2018

31 mins

The inimitable panel for this episode are comprised genius minds and parenting wizards Amy Taylor Kabbaz from Happy Mama and Mark Harris a.k.a Buzz The Band Leader from Lah-Lah's Big Live Band.

The hotly debated topics of the the panel discussed are;

  • Sibling rivalry and how to keep brothers and sisters from killing each other.
  • What advice would you give your former new parent self?
  • Should obese children be made to go to the gym?
  • What are the best and worst Mother's Day gifts you've ever received or, in Mark's case, given?

Sibling rivalry: What do you do?

Kinderling's High Five album of the week is all about sibling relationships; Songs for Sisters and Brothers. The album comes from the creative brain of Vered , a music therapist in New York. She wrote the album based on her experiences with her children, and the relationships of those who come to her for music therapy. One of her tips was to not step in when your children fight. That by stepping back you take away what they’re really fighting for; your love and attention. What do you do when your children fight? Amy and Mark discuss how they deal with fighting in their families, and some of the best and worst spats they've seen in their parenting days.

What advice would you give your “new” mum or dad self?

Another Kinderling Conversation guest this week was Jamila Rizvi  talking about her new bookThe Motherhood, Australian women share what they wish they’d known about life with a newborn.  The book is full of really heart felt letters to their younger new mum-selves (in the first six weeks). There were pleas to be kinder to themselves, not to worry about their careers and a fair bit about unexpressed anger. As parents of kids who are a little older, Amy, Mark and Shevonne have some serious thoughts for their former selves.

Should children under five go to the gym?

An enterprising fellow called Andy Gray in the UK has founded GymFants, a place that houses mini pieces of gym equipment so parents and kids can start exercising together. He did it to fight the high levels of obesity of children in his town. But is this really a good thing?

Memorable Mother’s Day presents

Shevonne's husband once gave her an iPhone battery charger for Mother’s Day. He thought it would be useful. Sometimes partners don't realise that Mother's Day is NOT the day to be buying a new kettle or toaster and calling it a gift just for the mum.
