According to NAPLAN, only 25% of Indigenous students in remote Australia meet the minimum standard for reading and writing, compared to 90% of non-Indigenous students.
As part of Indigenous Literacy Day 2017, the Indigenous Literacy Foundation have launched the Yakanarra Song Book. The book is a collection of songs in both Walmajarri and English and illustrated by children from the Yakanarra Community School.
Mentoring and guiding the project was beloved author Alison Lester, who is also an ambassador for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Have a listen to how the project came to be!
