These days kids are doing more extra-curricular activities than ever before – and when it comes to dance classes, they’re often doing more hours too.
With an increase in hours, comes an increase risk of injury. In fact a 2010 study by University of Sydney PhD candidate, Melinda Purnell, found that dancers under 14 who did more than eight and a half hours of training per week, faced a risk of chronic injury.
Kat Rowling is a physio and Pilates instructor at Perfect Form Physiotherapy in Sydney, a practise that specialises in treating dancers. In her work she has also found that her clients face other problems related to posture and movement.
Kat joined Shevonne Hunt with one of her clients, Eloise, and Eloise's Mum Antonella, to talk about the increase in injuries seen at her practice, plus how parents can try to be more mindful of overloading their children's schedules.
