This episode of The Parent Panel features Seamus Byrne, dad of two and managing editor of Science Alert, and Georgie Dent, mum of three, writer and Fairfax journalist.

Seamus and Georgie bring their experiences from the home and the wild world of grown ups to debate the issues that concerned parents this week. From the controversial and divisive, to the nostalgic and silly.

Are smart home devices making kids rude?

"Home assistants" such as Amazon Alexa and Google Home are meant to be a way of getting off screens, but are there a few downsides to the new devices. Jordan Lee Willox wrote about it this week after noticing a few things that were a bit off when his son used the device. His concerns were the impact instant answers to every questions would have on his son, and there is a question about whether it will stop kids using 'please' and 'thank you'. Is there potential for these devices to do more harm than good?

Re-wilding your family

Mark Boyle is a writer and hard-core greenie. He's currently living without technology, and wrote about how we all need to re-wild ourselves. Part of his argument is living a simpler life, and keeping alive traditions and ways of living that existed before technology. What would you like to bring back, into your family now, that you had growing up? Shevonne wants a television with just four channels. "That way we would all have to watch the same shows, or turn it off when there was nothing on." she adds.

Children who lie are smarter, but is that a good thing?

Recent reserarch has raised the notion that children who lie often have higher IQs. But does that really help us as parents? The first few times our children fib it can seem silly and even a bit funny, but once they grow up it can become a real problem. The panel discuss the how they handle lying in their families, plus Georgie recalls catching her own daughter red-handed when she pushed over her sister and flat out denied it!

Childhood fears

This week the Twitter-sphere was abuzz with the things they used to be scared of as kids. Some of the best included one woman who used to be worried that she would die on the Titanic... The panellists dish on their own fears as kids, and some of the things that terrify their own children. Plus Shevonne's personal favourite which was "That my teddy would suffocate in my bed if his head went under the covers."
