A tragedy occured in Sydney's western suburbs last week when a young boy with autism was found to have passed away after wandering away from the respite care centre where he was being cared for while his parents were away.
Erika Gleeson is a senior behaviour specialist and founder of Autism Swim. She explains that this type of wandering behaviour should definitely not be classified as "running away," and how damaging it can be to use that language when it comes to understanding ASD behaviours.
