Saved!!! by Lydia Williams

Thu 5 March 2020

Little Lydia loves playing sport with her animal friends in the Aussie outback. She soon learns that they each have a special talent, and Lydia wants to be the best at something too...but is there a sport for her?

Saved!!! is an inspiring book about sport, friendship and perseverance, written by Indigenous Australian soccer player, Lydia Williams, who is best known as the goalkeeper for the Matildas - Australia's national soccer team.

Lydia grew up in the desert in Western Australia and travelled with her family to many Aboriginal communities where she learnt how to play AFL barefoot on the red earth. Lydia's family taught her how to live off the land and the values of Indigenous culture, and she even had two pet kangaroos!

When her family moved to Canberra, Lydia's Mum signed her up for a few sports teams as a way to make friends. On the division one soccer team, the only free position was goalkeeper, and it was there that she fell in love with soccer.  Lydia currently plays for Melbourne City in the W-League, and is also signed to the Seattle Reign FC in the United States.

All the action in Saved!!! is brought to life by Melbourne-based author and illustrator Lucinda Gifford. She illustrated the Chook Doolan series, and The Adventures of Princess Peony.
