There's a Hippopotamus on Our Roof Eating Cake by Hazel Edwards

Thu 12 March 2020

On top of the roof, the hippo can do what he likes. He eats cake, watches TV, and doesn't have to go to bed when he's told to. Written from the perspective of a little girl, Hazel Edwards' famous book gives us an insight into childhood, through the celebration of her rather large imaginary friend.

This year is the 40th anniversary of There's a Hippopotamus on Our Roof Eating Cake written by award-winning author, Hazel Edwards, O.A.M.

After the first Hippopotamus book was published in 1980, Hazel wrote 6 more books. The Hippo also inspired a junior chapter book, classroom play scripts, a musical stage production and a short movie.

Hazel received an Order of Australia Medal for services to literature in 2013, was awarded the Australian Society of Authors’ Medal in 2009 and has been nominated three times for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (amongst her other accomplishments).

Deborah Niland brought the carefree hippo to life in all his pink glory. Deborah is an award-winning writer and illustrator of children's books, who has also painted for art exhibitions and galleries, and illustrated for newspapers and magazines. Most of all, she has built a successful career illustrating children's books.
